Suidcide is becoming an 'epidemic'. In Bangalore alone more than 1400 people committed suicide within the first nine months of the year (2011). We can safely say that millions of people commit suicide at the global level every year. Out ofseven million, 1400 die within a period of nine months. It means the annual figure can be aournd 2000! Then, for 7000 million ( that is the global population) the figure will cross 2000000. That is a whooping 2 millions! And these are only reported cases. Many more would have died unnoticed. The death rate of HIV/AIDS for 2010 was 1.8 million. Whereas there is no cure for HIV/AIDS, there are cures for the mental and social conditions that lead people to suicide. In this article we discuss two aspect. One aspect discusses the patients' own effort to come out of the disease. The other aspect discusses the role of friends, kinsfolk and society as a whole.
First, suicide does not solve any problem. Neither does it put end to any problem. The problem has its own independent existence. Suppose you are heavily indebted. You will die an indebted man. What an ignominious death! What a shameful legacy to your offsprings! Instead, try geuinely to repay your debts and you will get help from all your friends and relatives and even courts take into consideration your repayment capacity and give directions to the lenders. I know a case in which a maidservant came to the rescue of a family in whcih she was working when the family was overburdened with debts. No one of us knows what life has in store for us. By putting an end to our own life, we may even miss an opportunity to become powerful one day. It is never too late to start anew! Even in your nineties! As Tam Hanks says in "The Castaway" (2008), "keep breathing". You never know when the tide will turn in your favour!
Are you trying to punish someone or some people by putting an end to your own life? They will become more angry with you for your betrayal. And they will forget one day. Live and prove yourself. But suicidal tendency comes for many other reasons too. The loss of a beloved one will lead some to this. Just remember Indra Goswami, the famous Assamese writer who passed away recently. She lost her husband just two years after her marriage. She had severe bouts of depression. She overcame that and became a writer beloved by a whole people.
Teenage people commit suicide when they fail in exams. But they should know that university degree is not anything and everything as far as success in life is concerned. Not that education is unnecessay. Learning is a life long process. Life is the greatest university and you need life and nothing else to get admitted into this university. If you can't enter Harvard, prove your metal in life. By the way, Bill Gate, the founder of Microsoft and Larry Ellison, the founder of Orace are college dropouts.
Nobody in the world loves you! All the better! You have lesser obligations. Humour apart, how many are loved by you? After all, the world is full of wonder ful people who deserve your love. Surely, children are still beautiful. And love is all about giving without asking anything in return! Self pity is the first step towards suicidal tendencies. But often it also happens that those who are suffering from self pity are those people who make the lives of their kith and kin hell. They are the most selfish lot.
People can prevent their friends and relatives from choosing suicide. Relationslhips and friendship have to be cultivated You do not have to give money to save some one from suicide. You can give quality association and give hope. It is not "Live and let live". It is 'live' and help your people to live. Do not shun friends and relatives when they are in trouble. You may not give them calls when they are in good shape. But do not fail to be in touch when they are in bad days.
Search for your destiny till the last day of your life. Never be alone. If you believe in God, visit temples, mosques, chuches if not regularly, at least when you are in trouble. Do not allow your ego to enslave you. No one is inferior to you. Never forget those who helped you once. Take interest in the welfare of your people. Do not hesitate to ask for help when you are in trouble and do not allow your ego to stand in the way. Just like the cart is put in the boat, the boat also will be put on the cart one day. It is all in the game of life.
But to meke our life easier, we should not put others' life in difficulty. A deep sense of responsibility alone can save people from the thought of suicide.
