Money matters sever several friendships and relationships. Some times we get inadvertently involved in money transactions, where we are caught in tight corners and say ‘yes’.

Sometimes friends borrow money or articles from you and conveniently forget to return. Some take you to a restaurant and make you foot the bill without offering to pitch in. There are such innumerable occasions Where in you are cornered.  The tact of coming out of such situations without ruining the relationships is termed as ‘Money Etiquette’.

Steps

1

If a friend forgets to return your money – start the conversation by saying “ money matters should not ruin friendship” and remind him/her about your money. If after two or three reminders you do not get the money, time has come to choose between friendship or money.

2

some spend a lot of money on themselves  by borrowing– but fail to return the amounts. Its better to tackle them straight about their extravagance and their attitude of not returning the money or any borrowed articles.

3

If you know that your friend is the type who would never foot the bill in the canteen, announce before hand that the bills would be paid separately.

4

When there is a function or wedding- you are collecting the money from your colleagues and two three persons have promised to pay later. Ask them politely and separately. If you feel that they have done it intentionally- next time around you give your share and refuse to collect, since you had a bitter experience earlier.

Tips

  • Best policy is to share the bills or pay for your item if you go to a canteen or shop
  • It is always better to say ‘No’ though it is sometimes embarrassing rather than get into an unpleasant situation.
  • Not all friends or colleagues are avoiding types. If you know the mentality of the person, you can foot the bills and he/she may do so on another occasion.
  • If you are lending your article, insist that it be returned the next day in tact, as you need it.

Caution

  • It could strain your relationships, if you are rude in dealing with friends or relations.
  • Exercise extreme caution when giving a hand loan and asking for return.
  • Avoid lending articles as there is a possibility of its being returned in damaged condition.
