In this modern world, everyone is running around and dont seem to be having any time to devote for themselves.  But once a child enters a family, it is very very important that utmost attention is given to the child.  In whatever work is being done at home make sure the child also gets involved, instead of separating the child.

A constant rapport must be maintained with a child.  From the time we get up in the morning let the child also be around and while doing any work point out each thing and ask the child to identify it, once it starts identifying it and is able to name the proper words for all the items in and around, next step is to start allowing it to get familiar with the alphabets through the words printed in around the house.

While we read newspapers, magazines, story books for children etc allow the child also to be in and around the people of the house.  Ask the child to recognize the different alphabets and once the child is familiar with the alphabets, slowly ask the child to form words with the help of the alphabets it is familiar with.

When one goes for shopping or while taking the child to its school ask the child to join the alphabets of the name of the shops or hoardings etc and pronounce it.

Purchase short story books or books with pictures with words and sentence and sit along with the child and together read the books.  Purchase for the child comic books like tinkle, amar chitra katha etc and tell the child stories from the books and in the process create an interest in books.  But in the whole process the presence of parents especially, elders etc is quiet necessary.  This develops the habit of reading in a child.

In the initial stages parents read out the books and tell stories for a child and in later stages the child must be made to read the stories and tell stories or what it has understood from it to the parents.  Children like being given attention.  Reading books especially story books when a child is very small leads to an overall development.
