Save from stolen your laptop with an actual physical lock. It is small cable lock, it may deter casual crooks. In the incident of a thief succeeding in breaking the lock, consider a security alarm.

To save your file and folder you can encrypt them in XP and Vista. Choose Start, All programs, accessories, Windows explorer. Right click on the file you want to encrypt, and then choose properties. Under the General Tab, choose Advanced, then select Encrypt contents to safe data. To decrypt, unclick the box.

Turn off File sharing when not in use. XP does it by default. Select Control Panel, windows firewall, exception and making sure file and printer sharing is not checked. In vista select change setting in windows firewall, select exceptions and do the same thing.

When you are not using your Wireless card then turn it off. You can turn it off in XP by right clicking the wireless icon in the taskbar and select Disable. In Vista select manage wireless networks’, right click on the wireless icon and select disable.
