How to obtain an Indian driving licence

Young and elderly alike are opting for own transportation as public transport is not able to meet the demand and a lot of time is wasted in waiting.. It is a long process to owning a vehicle, its registration and obtaining a driving license It is necessary to know as to whom you should contact, the necessary documents to be submitted and the fees for various categories.

Steps

Learning Licence (LLR)– form 1,1a,2 are to be filled up,Xerox copy of  one of the below -passport, telephone bill, house tax receipt, LIC policy, pay slip, voter’s card, ration card or pan card.- is to be included.

  • For age proof – birth certificate, school certificate, certificate issued by medical officer/civil surgeon.
  • AGE:16 years for vehicles without gear,18 years for light motor vehicle and vehicle with gears.
  • Fees: Rs. 60/-30/- fee + Rs.30/- service charge)
  • Driving Test-the fee for driving test will be Rs.90/- you have to drive the vehicle of track which takes about 10 minutes. You have to obtain at least 12 marks out of 20.

PERMANENT DRIVING LICENCE – Form 4 is to be filled up.

  • LLR original is to be submitted.
  • Appear with vehicle for licence.
  • Fees- Rs.390-Rs.440 depending on the category of the vehicle.

INTERNATIONAL DRIVING  PERMIT(IDP)- Form 1a,4a are to be filled.

  • Submit original Indian Driving Licence,  Xerox copy of passport and visa.
  • There will not any driving test but the person must appear before the concerned office.
  • Fees- Rs. 650/-

DUPLICATE  DRIVING LICENCE –Form LLD is to be filled.

  • Police certificate is to be attached
  • Fees-315/-

RENEWAL OF DRIVING LICENCE- Forms 9,1,1a are to be filled.

  • Original driving licence, medical certificate of people aged above 50.
  • Fees-Rs.350/-

REGISTRATION OF VEHICLE- form 20,21, 22, to be filled

  • Sale certificate, invoice bill, proof of residency, life tax receipt (paid at e-seva), insurance certificate.
  • The vehicle is to be compulsorily produced for inspection.
  • Motor cycles –Rs.160/- and form 26 is to be submitted along police enquiry certificate and no objection certificate from the financier.
  • Light motor vehicle like autos and jeeps – Rs.500/-Form 26 to be submitted along with police enquiry certificate and no objection certificate from the financier.
  • Transport vehicle –Rs.600/-
  • Heavy vehicles – Rs.800/-

Tips

make enquiries with the Regional transport office before applying, for any change in rules.

Caution

  • The fees mentioned are subject to variation from time to time.
  • Try to avoid going through the brokers unless you want to get a license or Registration done urgently or do not have the time to run around.
  • It is not advisable for children below age to apply for licence with wrong date of birth..

The number of questions may vary from State to State, however, the questions in this website are the ones normally in the syllabus. In order to practice online you may visit the following link. There are about 250 questions in this website and 10 are free sample learners licence questions. Register to access all the Driving Licence questions.

5. Once you clear your learners license, you may book a slot for the permanent licence (This is in case of Andhra Pradesh) on the same website as stated above. For other states call the RTA office to find out the availability

You have to go in person to the RTA office. If the RTA Office in Jhansi is computerized and the same is the case with Kerala RTA, then you can get it done in Kerala with a change of address. If either of them is not computerized then you need to visit in person mate !

Suggestion : kindly do not encourage brokers ! Its not only illegal but also a risk to your family in case of any untoward incident. Try to get a licence only when you are perfect on road with the road awareness. Not just the above, you would risk other lives !

Lost Driving Licenc

If you have a copy of your licence, then, you will be able to get a duplicate copy easily. However,
1) If you do not have a copy of it,
or
2) If you do not remember the date issued
or
If you do not remember the Licence document number, then,
Approach the issuing RTA Office and specify your details as mentioned in the Licence. They would conduct a search and issue a duplicate licence. However, if it is still not traceable then you need to apply for a fresh licence.
