How to obtain Birth/Death Certificates

Birth Certificate has become mandatory to obtain  Passport, Driving licence, Insurance, Credit cards etc, apart from school  admissions and procuring jobs. Even to get into the army and marriage registration birth certificate is requiredBirth Certificate is necessary for people trying for permanent residence in a foreign country.Death certificate is necessary for claiming Insurance, properties etc.

Steps

In the urban areas, the birth of a child is to be registered with the  Municipal Corporation, Minicipality, Contonment Board. If the birth has taken place in the rural area, register with the Secretary, Village Panchayath.

The concerned Medical Officer in charge, of hospitals, nursing homes, Primary health centre,  must take the responsibility of registering the birth of a child.   The head of the family must assume the responsibility of registering, if the birth takes place at home. It is the duty of The officer in charge of the jail, if the birth takes place in jail.

The birth of a child can  be recorded free of cost, within 21 days of the birth of the baby. Application  form no. 1, can be obtained from the Registrar of Births and Deaths

The same officers can register death also, which is needed for various claims.
the same 21 days period is applicable for death certificate.

Tips

  • birth or death that has not been registered with in 21 can also be recorded later with a nominal fine.
  • Any mistakes in the entry can be rectified.
  • The birth certificates for a new born is free if obtained with in 21 days of birth. It can be procured with a nominal fine within one year. After that a fee of Rs. 10, along with the certificate from 1st class Magistrate ,RDO or Sub- collector are necessary

Caution

  • Any false information given regarding the name of the baby, the parents , the date of birth or residence, during registration is a punishable offence.
  • The gruardian of the child can be punished under the 1969 births and deaths act, if he does not record the birth of a baby.
