It has become a common news that Indians are attacked frequently in US, UK and in Australia and New Zealand down under. It is essential that we Indians do a little self introspection to find out the reason behind it. How come only Indians among all Asians are targeted? What is wrong in them that is attracting a great degree of animosity? Is it only the racial feeling and jealousy or is there anything wrong in our behavior that is making us the sitting ducks? Is our cultural baggage hanging heavy on our heads? Are we misfits in foreign countries? Is our ‘herd mentality’ the reason for this animocity?
Some are of the opinion that, the fact that Indians are faring well in foreign countries, they are hard working , occupy high posts and earn good salaries is irksome to the natives. The zest for costly items among Indians makes them look more well off that they are targeted during this period of recession.
Many are of the opinion that Indians abroad flout their costly gadgets and branded clothes, earn extra money by doing part time jobs, talk in their own tongues among themselves, mingle less with others, they talk loudly, play music loudly which is considered to be uncouth in all those countries. Some of our food habits and eating manners are also not acceptable to the locals.
So let us all ponder over our weaknesses and probe ways to over come Them.
’Be a Roman while in Rome’ – is a commonly heard adage. Observe the life style of people around you and rearrange yours accordingly.. Talking or laughing in high pitch is not acceptable any where. The natives in most of the countries, smile at you even if they don’t know you. But we smile only when we see acquaintances. Learn to smile, wave or wish when you come across unknown people, it does not hurt you.
‘Thank you’,’please’ and ‘sorry’ are the words that we often do not use as we take people for granted. People over there expect you to say these words as per the situation. Do say ‘sorry’ for the slightest slip up.
do not travel alone in trains. Hire a taxi, or it is a better bet to buy a car. You can even start a car pool to go for part time work if you are a student.do not reside in risky suburbs, otherwise move in groups. Live only where 2 or 3 Indian families are residing.
keep in touch with all the other Indians. Help each other in need. We all know the saying “United we stand” Unfortunately, if there is a chance encounter with a ruffian, coolly handover your money and other valuables, than be beaten.
Don’t be a show off. Don’t flash your currency openly.
You can not help it , if your performance at studies or job is good, that leads to jealousy. The recession also is the culprit. You need not stow away your culture, but stick to it at home or in Indian gatherings.
There is no need to be scared and you need not cancel your plans to go to Australia. Getting a Visa is easier as they need more youngsters there to work for them.
try to polish your behaviour if it is uncouth. Such behavior is common for Indians but not for others.
