How to make Green Peas Sambar (Karnataka style)

Green Peas Sambar is a delicious sambar from Karnataka.  It goes very well with white rice or roti.

Things You'll Need

  • Peas                      2 cups(boiled)
  • Rice                       1 tsp
  • Cumin                    1 tsp
  • Red chillis               6
  • Coconut                  3 tbsp(fresh/dry)
  • Coriander seeds       1 tbsp
  • Tamarind pulp          2 tbsp
  • Jaggery                    1”  cube
  • Curry leaves             2 sprigs
  • Coriander leaves       1 tbsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for tempering
  • Rai,cumin,hing for tempering

Soak rice, cumin seeds,red chillis,coconut (if using dry) for ½ hour.  Grind this mixture to a fine paste along with coriander seeds.  Once the paste is ready, mix the green peas with the paste and heat in a vessel,on medium flame.  Add 4-6 cups of water.

Add salt, jaggery and tamarind paste and keep stirring the sambar as the bottom can get burnt.

Now heat oil for tempering and add the ingredients(Rai, Hing and Cumin) along with curry leaves.  Once the oil is very hot and the cumin seeds turn brown add the these spices to the sambar.  Sprinkle coriander leaves keep covered for 5 minutes and remove from fire.
Serve with rice or roti.

Caution

  • Needs continuous stirring as there is a possibility of bottom getting burnt due to use of rice.
