How to get Bus Route information for MTC Chennai

Are you new to Chennai and are trying to figure out bus route and timings for MTC Chennai? Finding it hard to figure out which bus to take and when?
Follow these simple guidelines to get MTC bus route recommendations for Chennai.

Steps

For locations connected by direct bus routes:

MTC Chennai (Metropolitan Transport Corporation) now offers bus route information on their website.

Visit www.mtcbus.org

Once you're on the website:

Click Routes and Select Route-wise Info. Enter your Origin and Destination localities in Chennai.

Currently this site does not provide route information when there is no direct bus route between 2 areas. In addition you can also get information for Bus fares here.

Note: This site does not offer timing/frequency information.

For locations NOT connected by direct bus routes:

If you start and end points are not connected by a direct bus, it will be better to look for routes in http://rab.in/bus/chennai.

Enter your Origin and Destination localities in Chennai. The site then recommends multiple bus routes when the origin and destination are not connected by a single bus route!

Note: Bus timing/frequency information is not available on this site.

Tips

Check with local bus travellers to get bus timings at a particular bus stop.
You can pay fares by cash or buy passes at an MTC Bus Depot.

Caution

Buses in Chennai do not always operate according to schedule. Traffic delays normally cause buses to run behind schedule.
Always check with other people waiting at a bus stand to confirm that the bus you are interested in, stops at the bus stand!
When waiting at a bus stand make sure that you are standing on the right side of the road to take a bus to your destination!

It lists bus numbers that don't really exist anymore, and the routes that the website recommends when you have to change buses are terrible! It gives you the longest and most winded routes. So my personally experienced method to find your way around the bus in Chennai is the lovely trial and error. Use a map, and read the bus signs on the buses! Ask someone! Do not, unless you want to be tortured, use these websites.

One good thing though. If you have a specific bus number that you want to look up, the rab.in website is very useful, as it tells you all the stopping points!

Also, what is the use of knowing the routes without knowing the frequency of the bus. Bus frequency helps decide whether one can wait or use other options.

MetroCommute.in addresses both these problems. It lists buses based on locality names (stage names are also available) and also provides the frequency for each bus route, along with aggregate frequency.

Entering "localities" is not possible in both the websites as you have mentioned, only "stage names".

Also the website rab.in does not use the best logic (proper logic is not very easy/trivial) and hence ends up providing wrong answers. For example, to travel from Chromepet to Velachery (both in South Chennai), you are required to go to Thiruvottiyur B.S (North Chennai), which is wrong to say the least..

I used this sample source and destination to compare with the results with my previous comment on how the currently recommended website gives wrong suggestions - which is to switch at Thiruvottiyur B.S in North Chennai.

I would also like to remind you that MetroCommute.in is the only website where you can find..

* buses listed based on localities (instead of just "stage names"),
* frequency of individual bus-routes along with aggregate frequency.

MTC website gives the list of bus routes which consists 288 serial numbers. Though M9M route is there for a long time ie from T.Nagar to AG`s Colony, it does not find a place in it. It is not known how many such routes are omitted in the list.

Metrorail is going to run on two important corridors. It may be extended to some other routes in future. But, its routes may not be like MTC routes.

Like Metrorail is going to run only on certain routes, MTC can also identify very important routes and avoid overlapping of many routes in one way or other. Instead of running more buses on many overlapped routes, it can run shuttle service to important nodal bus stations from residential localities from where passangers could be asked to switch over to other buses (like railways) by issuing route tickets. This will increase the frequency of buses and avoid over crowding in buses and in bus stops.

T242 Route
