Steps
For locations connected by direct bus routes:
MTC Chennai (Metropolitan Transport Corporation) now offers bus route information on their website.
Visit www.mtcbus.org
Once you're on the website:
Click Routes and Select Route-wise Info. Enter your Origin and Destination localities in Chennai.
Currently this site does not provide route information when there is no direct bus route between 2 areas. In addition you can also get information for Bus fares here.
Note: This site does not offer timing/frequency information.
For locations NOT connected by direct bus routes:
If you start and end points are not connected by a direct bus, it will be better to look for routes in http://rab.in/bus/chennai.
Enter your Origin and Destination localities in Chennai. The site then recommends multiple bus routes when the origin and destination are not connected by a single bus route!
Note: Bus timing/frequency information is not available on this site.
Tips
- Check with local bus travellers to get bus timings at a particular bus stop.
- You can pay fares by cash or buy passes at an MTC Bus Depot.
Caution
- Buses in Chennai do not always operate according to schedule. Traffic delays normally cause buses to run behind schedule.
- Always check with other people waiting at a bus stand to confirm that the bus you are interested in, stops at the bus stand!
- When waiting at a bus stand make sure that you are standing on the right side of the road to take a bus to your destination!

Cleanliness of Deluxe buses of MTC buses which are running in Chennai are not up to the mark. Name alone is deluxe, but if you get in, you will be surrounded by dust and waste only, especially a place very near to driver and bonnet. Clean clothes of office goers will immediately become dirty and dusty, if they sit on seats. TN Govt is investing huge money for new vehicles even then they are not appointing any cleaners for these buses, it seems. If officials feel to cut the cost by not appointing necessary cleaners as needed, obviously they are ignoring the preventive maintenance, and then they have pay for it by spending money on Huge Maintenance even for lesser life time of the vehicle. Will concern officials take remedial actions to maintain the public property? If the concern officials are not doing the wrights so, then their salary will punish them. Performing perfect duty is equal to the service to thee almighty.

As considerate as this article may be, it is also a bit inaccurate. The two websites listed are a bit useless if you're trying to find your way around Chennai, especially the rab.in website. It lists bus numbers that don't really exist anymore, and the routes that the website recommends when you have to change buses are terrible! It gives you the longest and most winded routes. So my personally experienced method to find your way around the bus in Chennai is the lovely trial and error. Use a map, and read the bus signs on the buses! Ask someone! Do not, unless you want to be tortured, use these websites.
One good thing though. If you have a specific bus number that you want to look up, the rab.in website is very useful, as it tells you all the stopping points!
