How to do Pranayam (regulated breathing in Yoga)

Breathing is an automatic process in living things. Many are not aware that retaining the air we breathe in, for few seconds and then exhaling is very much beneficial. Controlled and regulated breathing is Pranayam.

Initially it is to be learnt from a teacher.You can control your mind by controlling your breath.

Things You'll Need

  1. comfortable seat
  2. calm atmosphere (without disturbance)
  3. serene mood

Steps

First stage- sit in Padmasan (the best), Sidhasan or Sukhasan and practice to sit in that posture for long period.Be relaxed.

Second stage-breathe in and out dee[ly and slowly. Do not hold your breath.   Close your right nostril with your right thumb.
breath in through your left nostril
Close the left nostril with your right little finger and remove the right thumb, breathe out through your right nostril.
do in the reverse way.

Third stage- the real Pranayam process is done in the 3rd stage.
breathe through your left nostril and retain the breath to the count of 4

start retaining the air for short period in the beginning and slowly increase the duration.

Breathing in, retaining and breathing out must be in the ratio of 1:4:2 seconds.
This rejuvenates the body.
Pranayam needs to be practiced for atleast  one month under guidance.

Tips

  • Pranayam helps digestion, concentration, purifies blood and the supply of oxygen increases.
  • Pranayam should be practiced on empty stomach. But a cup of milk or juice is allowed half an hour before.
  • Sit in the East or North corner to practice.
  • Head, neck and body must be in a straight line.
  • Do not stretch beyond your capacity or till your are tired.
  • Practicing to be truthful, controlling evil feelings of anger, jealousy and greed would give you peace of mind and give you the benefits of Pranayam.

Caution

  • Do not start on your own with out a guide.Do not over strain yourself to attain perfection.
  • Do not practice after food.
  • Try to control anger and evil thoughts.
