If it is for her Birthday -  you could get a string of pearls, a bouquet, a bottle of good perfume, a box of chocolates, a book by her favorite author, a small potted plant (if she likes gardening) or a dress ( if you know her preference of color and size).

For Valentine’s day-  A bouquet of flowers, chocolates, a CD of romantic songs, or a small heart shaped token of love would be ok for a girl friend.  If you are engaged, you need to give an expensive and special gift to her to make her feel special.
 
A lavish gift could be:

• a piece of jewelry
• a digital camera
• a romantic night out, like a candle light dinner at an expensive restaurant
• an expensive photo (digital) frame with a photograph of you both, looking jubilant  on your engagement day
• a saree or dress that would impress her

If you are buying her a gift for her success in an examination or interview, or for securing a job – you could buy her a mobile, a trendy hand bag, or a book on how to cruise along smoothly with the boss and colleagues in the new job.

Even a friendship day would deserve a gift. If it is a girlfriend, you could buy her a friendship day card, with a friendship band and quotation stand on friendship. But if you are serious about her or you are already engaged, offer to celebrate at a fast food joint with her friends or siblings. You could also plan for a picnic, with friends from both sides.

If it is just to prove that you care for her – general greeting cards which articulate your feelings for her should do the trick.  A small token gift (like a heart shaped- key chain, or  quotation stand) can also could be added.
You could also arrange for a lavish party (if your budget permits) to celebrate the occasion for which you are buying her a gift.
