Go to www.irctc.co.in and register youself on the site after which you shall get a confirmatin of your account and details through your e-mail.
Log on to irctc.co.in using your usernae and password. once logged in you shall have to enter your journey details in the plan my travel after which you shall be shown the trains and seats availibility in each class.
once you have decided on the train and class you have to clich on the corresponding button which wll then show you the fare, you then have to enter passenger details and payment options. you shall be led to a secure payment site after which your transaction is complete and you shall recieve your e-ticket.
Tips
register for subhyatra if you are a frequent traveller.you shall earn points each time you travel which can later be redeemed for tickets. also if you have a subhyatra card then you need not buy platform tickets.
Caution
There is no refund payable if you cancel confirmed tatkal tickets
