The soaring mercury levels irritate us enough and the powercut is the last straw. The airconditioners and coolers turn into show pieces when the power cut is on.
But you can try to cool yourself by adopting the traditional, time tested alternatives and remedies.

Steps

1

Washing your face, hands and feet or wiping with a wet cloth several times during the peak hours offers relief. Wet thin towel wrapped around your shoulders keeps your cool if you are slogging in the kitchen during afternoons (the demands of bored children at home for summer holidays drive the mothers crazy)
submerging the feet in a basin of water with a wet towel on the head brings down the heat.
The cool minty body talcs offer good relief.

2

drinking lots of water, barley water, coconut water, fruit juices, eating fruits  like watermelons, musk melons, oranges during the afternoon instead of tea or coffee is advisable.

3

keeping the windows closed and covering the windows with Khus Khus mats or wet curtains keeps away the hot air.
Open all the doors and windows after sunset to flush out the hot air inside.

4

Soak the terrace with water , if you live in a buglow, before 12 noon, to bring the temperature down.
Paint the terrace with a special paint the reduces the room temperature by 3-4 degrees.
Paint the walls, that face South and West ( receiving maximum sunlight) , with dull colors like lavender, light blue that do not reflect the light.

5

Known fact that haveing plants in the balconies, and trees around the bunglows gives shade and relief.

Tips

  • wiping the children with a cloth soaked in eu-de-cologne or rose water mixed with water, keeps them cool.
  • having luke warm water bath at least twice keeps them fresh
  • using soft cotton clothes

Caution

  • avoid beverages like tea and coffe as they increase your thirst.
  • avoid coloring West and South facing walls with bright colors that reflect light, as West and South facing walls receive maximum light and heat.
