Ragging is the new bane in the educational institutions. We get to read and hear about various incidents very often. Though it is meant to make the new comers feel free and adjust to the new environment, it has become a dirty and cruel practice as the seniors turn into sadists. They try to show off and attract attention from others by torturing, humiliating and physically assaulting the new comers. Though ragging is said to be prevalent in professional colleges, it is equally common in other colleges.
Some of the new students are from the districts and villages. They come to the college with colorful dreams about their future and are not used to this type of barbaric treatment, which leaves them petrified.
Some of the wild demands of the seniors leave no option for the sensitive newbie’s, but to commit suicide. But there is no trace of remorse on the faces of these beastly seniors.
Though the Supreme Court banned raging in institutions in 2001,nothing seems to have changed.
The seniors are supposed to befriend the new comers, guide them around the campus and the hostel, and introduce them to the other new students. Small pranks like misguiding them or making them pay the canteen bill from their pockets are passable. Action is to be taken various ways depending upon the situation.
Form a “raging action force” in every institute and enroll students who are against this practice. This student body under the supervision of the Principal and lecturers counsel the juniors and the seniors.
Security personnel deployed in the campus and hostel premises can subdue the culprits.
Cc Tvs can be installed to monitor the activities of the students.
Even private hostels housing students must be under surveillance.
The timings for the seniors must be so adjusted that the juniors do not encounter them for at least 6 months. The class rooms for the juniors can be segregated to avoid any altercation.
The institution must assume the responsibility of the student even if any incident occurs out side the campus.Strict surveillance and punishments on the part of the principal and wardens can curb this practice.Imposing collective fines also can help
Install “complaint boxes” within the premises, where in the anonymity of the sufferers can be maintained so that they can drop in their complaints.
The names of professors/lecturers must be displayed on the notice board, wherein others can also report any incident immediately.
