
Ugadi ( New year) is celebrated with great élan in different states. The starting of spring season fills the hearts with glee and the new year celebrations add to the jubilation.It is believed Brahma ( the creator) started his creation on this day and hence Uga – adi (starting of creation )is celebrated. Lord Shri Ram’s coronation took place and King Udhisthir also came to the thrown on this day.

The month of “Magh” is considered to be one of the auspicious months. Rath Sapthami, Maha Shiva Rathri, Bhishma Ashtami and Ekadashi occur in this month.
“Agh” means sin and “Magh” eradicates sin. Bathing in the river in the early hours is important in this month. On the 4 day ( shukla chaturthi) fasting is conducted and Pujas conducted for Lord Ganesha and Lord Shiva. The next day being Vasanth Panchami Goddess Saraswathi Puja is done.

The first Hindu Festival in the first month of English calendar is Makara Sankranti. The transit of the Sun into Capricorn signifies this festival. The Sun will move towards North from this time. This is called the Uttarayan where in all the Gods are supposed to wake up from a 6 month long slumber.
